Every season, the runways in New York, London, Milan, and Paris set the direction — but the real art is taking inspiration from the show and turning it into something that works in real life. Not on the model, but on you.
In 2026, the trends are more exciting than ever. There’s a return to boldness, but with a new maturity — soft contours instead of sharp lines, natural skin instead of heavy foundation, and one clear rule: choose ONE accent and make it unforgettable.
Here are the 9 makeup trends for 2026 that we saw on the runway this year — and how you can make them work for you.
1. Skinimalism — Skin Comes First
Perhaps the strongest trend for 2026 isn’t a specific color or technique, but an approach: less is more when it comes to the base.
At the shows for Dior (Jonathan Anderson), Dries Van Noten, and Balmain, models walked out with nearly bare skin — barely visible foundation, natural texture, a hint of glow. Peter Philips (Dior) focused on skincare before makeup, Lucia Pica (Victoria Beckham) worked with minimal base and strategic highlighter, and Romy Soleimani applied the same approach at Sandy Liang and Ulla Johnson.
How to wear it: Invest in good skin prep — exfoliation, hydration, primer, and a lightweight tinted moisturizer instead of full-coverage foundation. Products like Armani Luminous Silk give radiance without the mask effect. This approach works for every skin type — for oily skin, simply swap the radiant primer for a mattifying one.

2. Soft Smoky Eye with Blurred Edges
The smoky eye is back, but not the way you remember it from 2010. In 2026, the contours are deliberately blurred, soft, almost “effortless” — with a ’90s feel.
At the Gucci show (Demna), makeup artist Sam Visser created exaggerated smoky eyes with long lashes and glossy lips. At Khaite, Diane Kendal used NARS Total Seduction Eyeshadow Stick for a diffused, grunge effect. And Isamaya Ffrench for Off-White added dark, rebellious energy.
How to wear it: Instead of black shadow, try warm browns or dark grays. Apply with your finger and blend outward — imperfections are welcome here. For deeper skin tones, rich chocolate and bronze shades create a stunning effect. Ideal for evening makeup, photoshoots, and any occasion where you want to turn heads.

3. Blue and Colorful Eyeshadow
Blue is the color of the season. At Anna Sui during NYFW, we saw softly blended blue eyeshadow with a ’60s retro spirit. Vivetta in Milan went for turquoise mascara and a fairy-tale gaze. And Collina Strada showed that colorful lids can be both playful and elegant.
The Makeup By Mario Ethereal Eyes palette (with a 29,000-person waitlist) and the YSL Couture Eyeshadow (sold out in one day) prove that the interest goes beyond the runway — ABH Glidr Eyeshadow Stick, Pat McGrath, Natasha Denona, and more offer accessible options for everyday wear.
How to wear it: Monochrome application (one color, blended across the entire lid) is the easiest entry point. For brown eyes, cobalt creates a beautiful contrast. For blue eyes, warm teal shades enhance the color. For green eyes, lavender and soft purple tones are perfect. For prom or a special occasion, add a touch of shimmer.

4. Graphic Eyeliner
Eyeliner is no longer just a thin line. At Vaquera, makeup artist Daniel Sallstrom created a retro ’60s cat-eye with a graphic line under the eye as well. At Harris Reed and Toga, we saw “ink-like” strokes — thick, calligraphic, almost like a drawing.
MAC Brushstroke 24-Hour Liner and Make Up For Ever Aqua Resist Color Pencil were among the products used backstage.
How to wear it: For everyday, the classic retro cat-eye is the most wearable version — an extended line that accentuates the eye shape. For events and photoshoots, you can experiment with floating liner (a line above the crease, without touching the lid) or a double flick. It works for every eye color and shape — just adjust the thickness.

5. Colored Mascara and Statement Lashes
Lashes are becoming a focal point. At Vivetta in Milan, turquoise mascara created a fairy-tale gaze. At Eckhaus Latta, Isamaya Ffrench used white mascara for a futuristic effect. And at Alice + Olivia, makeup artist T. Cooper coated false lashes with metallic gold shadow — the result was theatrical but stunning.
Lashify Gossamer and Ardell Naked Lashes were among the backstage favorites.
How to wear it: Colored mascara on the lower lashes is an easy, subtle way to try the trend — it adds character without being overly dramatic. For prom or a wedding, false lashes add volume and intensity that hold up in photos and on the dance floor.

6. Soft Pink Blush — The New Contour
Contouring is giving way to something fresher and more feminine. At the shows for Erdem, Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, and Missoni, we saw soft pink blush applied high on the cheekbones and blended outward.
Vogue Scandinavia also noted the “button-nose blush” — a light pink pigment on the tip of the nose for a fresh, wintry effect, seen at Erdem and Mame Kurogouchi.
Patrick Ta Major Headlines Blush Duo, Glossier Cloud Paint, and Rare Beauty Soft Pinch were among the most-used products backstage.
How to wear it: Apply blush higher than usual — on the cheekbones themselves, not in the hollows. Blend diffusely outward with a brush or fingers. Choose pink tones over berry — the result is fresher and more youthful. For fair skin, cool pink is ideal. For deeper skin tones, peach and coral add warmth.

7. Bold Lips — Oxblood, Berry, and Chocolate
Nude lips and sheer glosses are giving way to bold, saturated colors. At Elie Saab, Saint Laurent, and Carven, oxblood (dark red with a brown-purple undertone) dominated. At The Blonds, makeup artist Deney Adam used MAC Ruby Woo and Lady Danger for intense red. And Isamaya Ffrench for Off-White showcased brown “brownie” tones with Refy Lip Sculpt.
Westman Atelier Lip Suede, NARS Explicit Lipstick, and Byredo Lipstick Matte were among the favorites.
How to wear it: The key rule — if lips are the accent, keep the eyes minimal. Oxblood and berry look perfect on fair skin. For deeper skin tones, chocolate and warm brown shades create a stunning effect. For a wedding, berry shades are an elegant choice, while oxblood adds mystery for an evening occasion.

8. Velvet Texture and Blurred Lips
It’s not enough for lips to be bold — the way they’re applied matters just as much. At Tom Ford, makeup artist Lucy Bridge created velvet-matte lips in deep purple, saturated red, and denim blue using Tom Ford Runway Lip Stylo Matte. The edges were deliberately blurred — no sharp lip liner, just a “just-kissed” texture.
Refy Lip Sculpt and Byredo Lipstick Matte were also among the products spotted backstage.
How to wear it: Apply the lipstick straight from the bullet, then gently dab the edges with your finger — this creates the “blurred lip” effect that’s so on trend. The texture is velvet — not shiny, not fully matte. It works for any occasion — from everyday wear to a special event. For dry lips, exfoliate and hydrate with balm beforehand.

9. The One-Accent Rule
If you take away just one thing from the 2026 makeup trends, let it be this: natural, prepped skin plus ONE bold element.
Smoky eye? Lips stay nude. Oxblood lips? Eyes stay minimal. Colorful shadow? Blush and lips stay neutral. This is the philosophy that ties together every show this year — from Gucci to Dior, from Tom Ford to Collina Strada.
How to wear it: Before you start your makeup, decide which feature will be your accent for the day. Everything else plays a supporting role, not a competing one. This rule is universal — it works for every skin type, eye color, and occasion. And it’s the surest way to keep your look modern and balanced.
