Every spring, my inbox fills up with TikTok links and the same question: “Vessy, does this actually work?” Sometimes the answer is an enthusiastic yes. Sometimes it is a firm no. And sometimes it is “yes, but not the way you think.”

I decided to take the most popular TikTok makeup hacks and evaluate them through the lens of professional prom makeup. Which ones deserve a place in your prom look — and which should stay on your phone screen.

“Contour With a Fork” and Similar Hacks — Why Not for Prom

TikTok loves dramatic, eye-catching tricks. Contouring with a fork, applying foundation with a balloon, blending with a silicone sponge… These videos get millions of views because they are entertaining. But entertaining to watch and good for your skin are two different things.

Here is why these hacks do not work for prom makeup:

  • Fork/spoon contouring — creates a harsh, unblended line that looks terrible in close-up photos
  • Balloon foundation — presses product onto the surface without melting it into the skin
  • Tape for sharp eyeshadow lines — can irritate the delicate skin around the eyes
  • Applying makeup with bare hands — fine for everyday, but for a prom with 12-hour wear? No.

“If a trick takes 15 seconds on TikTok, ask yourself why professional makeup artists don’t use it. There is usually a reason.”

Hacks That ACTUALLY Work

Not everything on TikTok is gimmicky. Here are the popular tricks I approve and use myself:

Baking (Setting With Powder)

Applying a thick layer of translucent powder under the eyes, waiting 5-10 minutes, then dusting it off. TikTok did not invent this — drag queen makeup artists have used it for decades — but it introduced the technique to a younger audience.

Verdict: It works! But with a caveat — on young skin, you need a lighter hand and less powder to avoid drying it out or creating a “cakey” finish. I use this technique on nearly every prom client, just with a more delicate approach.

Lip Liner Overdraw

Slightly extending beyond the natural lip line with pencil to create the appearance of fuller lips.

Verdict: Works, if done VERY subtly — 1-2 mm maximum. An obvious overdraw line is instantly visible, especially in profile photos. I use a pencil in a shade as close to the natural lip tone as possible.

The “Latte Makeup” Aesthetic

Warm, brown, creamy tones everywhere — eyes, cheeks, lips. Monochrome, elegant, and incredibly photogenic.

Verdict: I love it! Perfect for prom, especially if you have a warm skin tone. It pairs beautifully with a monochrome look in warm tones.

“Clean Girl” — The TikTok Trend Made for Prom

The clean girl aesthetic is perhaps the most prom-appropriate TikTok trend:

  • Flawless, glowing skin
  • Natural brows
  • Subtle shimmer on the lids
  • Nude lips with gloss
  • Minimal but precise makeup

What TikTok calls “clean girl,” I have been doing for years — I just call it “perfected natural makeup.” The difference is that behind the apparent simplicity lie products worth 300-400 euros and 45-60 minutes of precise work. “The effort you cannot see” is the hardest effect to achieve.

Powder Tricks — Which Work, Which Don’t

TikTok is obsessed with powder. Here is my quick assessment:

These work:

  • Translucent setting powder — a classic, essential step in professional makeup
  • Powder BEFORE foundation (mattifying primer trick) — works for oily skin, reduces sebum
  • Powder contour — softer and easier to blend than cream contour

These don’t work for prom:

  • Full-face baking — on young skin, it makes makeup look heavy and unnatural
  • Powder instead of primer — does not set anything, just creates a layer that breaks apart
  • Baby powder for mattifying — not designed for the face, can cause breakouts

Highlighter Hacks — Glow or Disaster?

TikTok loves highlighter. Every week a new “hack” appears:

  • Highlighter as primer (under foundation) — works! Creates a “lit from within” effect that is beautiful for a dewy prom finish
  • Highlighter with a damp sponge — creates an intense, metallic sheen. For prom — dose carefully
  • Body highlighter — works perfectly on the decolletage and shoulders if the dress is open
  • Highlighter on the tip of the nose — a classic trick I love. But only as a precise dot, not along the entire length

“TikTok shows you highlighter under perfect lighting. At prom, the lighting is unpredictable — so I choose a highlighter that looks beautiful in ANY light.”

Eyeshadow — TikTok Techniques vs. Reality

“Cut Crease With a Spoon”

TikTok shows how to create a sharp cut crease using a spoon as a stencil. Reality: The shape of a spoon rarely matches your eye shape. A professional cut crease is drawn with a brush, tailored to your individual eye shape.

“Sunset Eyes” (Gradient Colours)

Red to orange to yellow to pink across the lid. Reality: It works, but requires high-quality, pigmented shadows. With cheap shadows, the colours turn “muddy.” I use brands like Jeffree Star, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and more.

“Graphic Liner” (Geometric Eyeliner)

Double lines, geometric shapes, negative space. Reality: Stunning for photos! But for prom — consider whether it will last 12 hours. If you want something bold, I suggest discussing bolder options with your makeup artist — using longer-lasting techniques adapted for the full evening.

What NOT to Try From TikTok Before Prom

There are tricks I strongly advise you to avoid before and on prom day:

  • DIY lemon peel — can burn the skin and cause dark spots in sunlight
  • Toothpaste for blemishes — dries, irritates, and can leave a mark
  • Salt water spray for “beach waves” — dries the hair and makes it unmanageable for styling
  • Vaseline as a makeup base — it is not a primer and prevents makeup from adhering
  • “Slugging” on prom day — a thick layer of Vaseline the night before can trigger breakouts on acne-prone skin

How to Filter TikTok Advice

Before trying anything from TikTok, ask yourself three questions:

  1. Who is demonstrating it? — A professional makeup artist or a teenager who has been doing makeup for six months?
  2. What lighting was it filmed under? — Good studio lighting makes everything look flawless. At prom, you will not have a ring light with you.
  3. What situation is it for? — Everyday makeup and 12-hour prom makeup are two different things

And most importantly: if you find something you love on TikTok — show it to me! I will tell you whether it works, how we can adapt it, and whether it suits your prom look and skin prep.

FAQ

Can I show my makeup artist a TikTok video as a reference?
Absolutely. Videos help the artist understand what style you are going for. Just know that real-life adaptations may be suggested.
Does Douyin makeup (Chinese TikTok) work for European features?
Some techniques work well, such as nose contouring and inner corner highlighting, which are universal. But extreme shading can look unnatural on European features.
Are popular TikTok foundations any good?
Some are genuinely excellent, such as Charlotte Tilbury and Rare Beauty. Others go viral because of marketing, not quality. Professional makeup uses top-tier cosmetics from brands like Dior, Chanel, Gucci, Clarins, and more.
Can I get a TikTok-style look for prom?
Yes. Many current trends come straight from TikTok. The key is adapting them for real-world conditions and 12-hour wear.
Is glass skin from TikTok realistic?
Yes. It is achieved with a hydrating primer, light foundation, and strategically placed highlighter without overdoing it.
Can I try TikTok makeup ideas during my trial session?
Of course. The trial session is exactly for that — testing ideas in a pressure-free setting.
Won't highlighter from TikTok make me look oily?
Not if applied strategically — only on the cheekbones, brow arch, and nose bridge. The T-zone is mattified separately.
How much does prom makeup cost with Vessy?
Starting from 61 euros for a full look with professional products, regardless of whether the inspiration comes from TikTok or Vogue.
